Shelving Rock Mountain - 12/16/11

I keep saying it, but the Lake George, NY area is full of great hikes.  I sound like a broken record, but it's true.  Take a look at these pictures and the view from Shelving Rock Mountain located on the east shore of the lake.

This hike is an easy 1.7 mile hike each way up an old jeep road.  The trailhead is on Shelving Rock Road.   It took us 35 minutes to reach the top.  From the summit you get far reaching views of the lake to the south, west and northwest.  You also get views of mountains to the east.

 Hike Stats:

Hike distance:  3.4 miles round trip
Hike time:  1 hour 15 minutes
Summit Elevation:  1125'
Lake Elevation:  320'

There is a nice rock plateau just a little below the summit

Little Buck Mountain in the background.  Great spot for a picnic.  We had our trail snacks here.

It was 40 degrees when we were up on the summit.  It sure doesn't feel like December!  Don't miss this hike if you are looking for a short hike in the Lake George area that has great views.

We started from the car at 8:30 AM and were back at 10:30 after enjoying the view for 45 minutes at the top.

  1. Beautiful views indeed! Is lake George a natural lake or an impoundment?

  2. It's natural. 32 miles long and 1-3 miles wide with a couple hundred islands. Most of the islands are owned by the state and are used for camping.
