Baxter Mountain in Keene Valley NY is a nice short hike that offers fine views for minimal effort. The summit can either be reached from the north via a trail from Route 9N (as I did), or by making a loop from Beede Road in Keene Valley.
The hike from Route 9N climbs 770' in 1.1 miles. The summit has a rock ledge that provides for an open unobstructed view. On this day, 5 inches of new snow made for a nice powder trek to the summit. Skies were mostly cloudy, but mountain cloud formations are often interesting, and today was no exception.
This hike (from 9N) can be done in an hour and a half or so and is well worth the trip.
