Stony Pond from Hewitt Pond - 11/11/12

Stony Pond lies in the Vanderwhacker Mountain Wild Forest, just north of Minerva, NY.  The shortest and easiest access is from a 2.1 mile trail from Route 28.  It can also be accessed from the east via a 3.9 mile route from Irishtown.  Lastly, it can also be accessed by a 5 mile trail from the north starting at Hewitt Pond.

Leesa and I had done the shorter routes before, so this time we took the 5 miles route from Hewitt Pond.  We found this route to be somewhat overgrown.  It doesn't receive a lot of use and is hard to follow at times.

Mike and Rev made it across the beaver dam to reach the lean-to

There is a nice lean-to at the water's edge on the west shore.  There have been 2 canoes and a rowboat there the last few times I've been there.

This was a nice warm indian summer day, and we enjoyed the day out, even though the trail was not the best.  The lean-to is one of the easiest to reach if you go in via the 2.1 mile trail from Route 28.
