Lubec, West Quoddy Lighthouse and the Bold Coast - 9/16/13

On Monday morning, 9/16, we left Millinocket and headed for the coast.  Our first destination was the easternmost town in the continental US, Lubec Maine.  One of those places we just had to see.  We had been to the western most point last year.

After looking around the Lubec, we crossed into Canada to see Roosevelt Cottage, the vacation home of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.  We stopped in, toured the house and watched the video about the Roosevelt's life there.  Quite a place!

Crossing back into the US, we went to the West Quoddy Lighthouse  and explored the area.

Next we headed south along the Bold Coast.  I had wanted to see the Cutler Coast Preserve.  I had read a couple articles that made me want to visit.  The first was from Backpacker Magazine,  the second was from USA Today.   Pretty good reviews!

Anyways, by the time we got to the Cutler Preserve, it was 5 PM.  That gave us just enough time to take the trail to the ocean, but not to complete the loop hike.

We got to the coast with enough light left to take some pictures.  It was a beautiful desolate spot.  We followed the trail along the coast until the first pocket beach cove.  It was starting to get dark and we hadn't grabbed our headlanps, so we couldn't linger.

The pics below give you an idea of what it looked like.  Next time we'll allow a day to complete the nine mile loop hike and perhaps camp at one of the 3 designated campsites near the ocean.

 

We left the bold coast at dark and continued south to Ellsworth, where we got a room for the night so we'd be positioned to explore Acadia starting the next morning.
