Hike to Douglas B-18 Bomber Crash - Mount Waternomee - Woodstock, NH - 9/16/18

I'm always fascinated with plane crashes, and when there is a plane crash site I can hike to, I always make it a point to get there and check it out.  While in New Hampshire, I caught wind of a plane wreck near Mount Moosilauke.  It is actually on the east slope of Moosilauke. although the nearest named peak is Mount Waternomee.

This crash was a Douglas B-18 bomber that crashed on January 14th, 1942.  I read an couple articles on the internet from the Laconia Daily Sun and a hiking article from HikeNewEngland.com.   The Hike New England link describes how to get to the site and where to park.

The hike is a short one, with the first 1.2 miles is on a forest road (Walker Brook Road), followed by a herd path to the wreck.   The vertical gain is only 600' in the first 1.6 miles, followed by a steep climb of 1000' in the last 0.7 miles.

The plane wreckage is strewn over quite a large area, and you can spend quite a while examining the various parts of the plane.

Below are some photos from our adventure.

Hike Stats:
Hike Distance:  ~ 5 miles roundtrip
Hike Time:  3 hours, including stops
Total Vertical Gain:  ~ 1700'
